Reliance Jio has certainly transformed the Indian telecom sector to a great extent with its lucrative offers and customer friendly schemes and created a lot of troubles for its competitors. Jio was launched in September 2016 and for some time in the initial phase it provided all the services for free to its customers. When it started charging fees, its tariff plans were also pretty cheap in comparison to other market players and it helped Jio in garnering a huge subscriber base.
The competitors of Jio, such as Bharti Airtel, Vodafone, Idea, etc were also compelled to reduce their prices and offer more services to their customers because of which the investments worth $50 million were written off by these telecom players.
There was a time when the chairperson of Bharti Enterprises (Airtel), Sunil Bharti Mittal slammed Jio for giving free offers because of which Airtel suffered losses and also for speaking against the relief package for the Indian telecom sector which could give some respite the troubled sector.
Mukesh Ambani, the chairperson of Reliance Industries also responded soon and said that there is no need of crying so much as the income and losses are the risks that these organizations take. Mukesh Ambani further said that the telecom players should not depend on government or regulators for making profits and he added that for him the most important thing is that we should move the country forward and the citizens of the country should also get benefitted from it.
On the question of Jio achieving break-even, Mukesh Ambani said that he doesn’t want to make a prediction but they are already ahead of their schedule in regard to the returns that they are getting. When he was asked that does he gets motivated by competition, he said that it is in their DNA to be focused and at Reliance it is being said that if you focus on your goal, you will achieve it by overcoming all the obstacles but if your focus is on the obstacles then you won’t be able to achieve your goal. In conclusion he said that at Reliance they want to be the best in the whole world and he is sorry if others feel that it is competitive.
This is certainly a great answer from the Indian business tycoon, what do you say?
