15 Everyday Things & Their Real Uses About Which You Have Absolutely No Idea
We all like to know more about the space, the aliens, etc. but have you ever thought about the use of two holes in your sports shoes or the hole in your pen cap? No, you have never thought about it and you need not worry as you are not the only person in this world who has no idea about it and about many other such things which are a part of our daily lives.
So let us enlighten you a little and make you aware about some things which are a part of our daily lives:
1. The little pockets in our jeans
Almost all the jeans manufacturers provide a small pocket on the side of the jeans which is also called as the fifth pocket and each person uses it as per his own convenience, while some use it for keeping lip balm, some use it for hiding cash by making a roll of it, etc. However, the real purpose of this tiny pocket was to keep pocket watches safe. In the older times, the miners used to keep their pocket watches with them and this pocket was specially designed for that purpose.
2. The hole in pen caps
Surprisingly, a pen is something which we used daily in our school days but have you ever thought about the hole in the cap of the pen. Well, some say that the hole is made in the pen cap to not let the ink dry but you will be amazed to know that the real reason behind it. The pen manufacturers were quite sure that the kids may swallow a pen cap so the hole is made in order to let the air flow. At least the kid may be able to breathe until the pen cap is pulled out of his throat.
3. The loop on the back of the shirt
Now this is something which everyone must have noticed but very few knew its real use. Well, in the older days the shirt was hanged using this loop so that its crease doesn’t get spoiled. However, now it mostly serves as a design as now people use hangers for hanging their shirts in the wardrobes.
4. A small hole in the airplane window
Even the frequent fliers may not be aware of the reason behind making a small hole in the windows of airplane. The first use of this tiny hole is to prevent the fog from getting collected on the window and the second use is to bring a balance in the air pressure. When the airplane flies high, the air pressure inside the plane and outside the place has a huge difference so the tiny hole maintains a balance in air pressure.
5. Hat Pom Pom
Nowadays the pom pom are used for only the purpose of making the hat look more beautiful but earlier in the 18th century, the French Marines used to save their heads from getting hit from the ship’s low ceiling.
6. Stickers with numbers on fruits
Having fruits is quite healthy but do you know about the stickers with numbers on the fruits. The stickers not only tell us about the producer and the country but whether the fruit is organic or non-organic. If there is a sticker with 4 digit number on the fruit and the first digit is “4”, this means that pesticides have been used on the fruit. If there is 5-digit number and the first digit is “9”, this means that the fruit is organic and if the number is 5-digit with “8” as first digit then it means that the fruit has been modified in genetic manner.
7. Two side holes in converse shoes
There are two purposes of the two side holes on the converse shoes, first is to prevent ventilation especially if a person wear shoes without socks and the second purpose is bar lacing. By getting a little creative in lacing a person can adjust the shoes in regard to his feet. See the image to get a better idea.
8. The connecting part of the chopstick
This connecting part of the chopstick is seen only in disposable chopsticks and it signifies that the chopstick has never been used.
9. The holes in earphones
The earphones have become a very part of life nowadays especially after we started using smartphones not just for talking but for listening music as well. If you would have noticed there are 2-3 holes in the earphones, while one is for the speaker, the others are for allowing the flow of air in small quantity which makes the diaphragm of the speaker move forward and backward which improves the quality of sound.
10. The car headrest
Basically the car headrest is for providing rest to the head of those who travel by car but there is one more use of car headrest and it is certainly life saving. God forbid but if you got drown in a river while sitting inside your car then you can pull this headrest out and use the metallic part for breaking the glass of the window for coming out of the car.
11. Why donut has a hole?
The donut is one of the most loved snacks in many parts of the world but do you know why it has a hole. Well now with the technological advancement and latest bakery tools and machines, making a pastry or snack of any size and shape is not difficult for the bakers but in the past it was difficult for the bakers to bake the middle and sides equally because of which donut came into existence.
12. Dimples on golf balls
Initially, the golf balls were made smooth but as the time passed, the players realized that the ball gets better as it gets old and scuffed. So the players kept using old balls for long times, when this was noticed by the manufacturers, they started producing balls with dimple which gives an impression that they are old.
13. The blue part of the eraser
Every school going person must have used eraser but were you aware of the real purpose of the blue part of the eraser. While the red or white part of the eraser is used for erasing what we have written on paper, the blue part is for erasing what we have written on hard surface such as wall, etc.
14. Holes at the bottom of the padlocks
The padlocks have to bear the brunt of heat, rain, etc as they are used for the purpose of locking the outside gates because of which they go out of order pretty soon. But if you want your locks to work properly, keep pouring engine oil regularly from the holes which are at the bottom of the padlocks.
15. Oval-shaped Hole in the handles of the pots and pans
If you have noticed, the handles of pots and pans have a oval shaped hole and many of us are not even aware of it despite cooking every day. These oval shaped holes are for holding the stirring spoons which makes cooking easy and also reduces the chances of kitchen getting dirty.
